Dogs generally have 8 blood groups, out of which DEA 1.1 is considered the most important for safe blood transfusions. It starts with DEA 1.1 and goes till DEA 8.0. Dogs with DEA 1.1 positive are called Universal Recipients and the dogs with DEA 1.1 negative can be Universal Donors. After carrying out research on various dog breeds Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (TANUVAS), Chennai declared that the native Indian Chippiparai is the new universal blood donor for dogs in the country. In the rest of the world, the Greyhound is considered a universal donor.

Wow, our indegenous breeds are really great! Unfortunately lack of awareness and publicity about these and also a mindset that everything from abroad is better has lead to the decline in their number and geographical spread. Most of them are know to the locals and a few dog enthusiasts who are really passionate about these desi breeds and their disvussions are mostly limited to the books and curriculam of Veterinary Sciences.
Thanks for sharing this wonderful info. Keep enlighting us this way.
